Ruth Cunningham & Gilda Lyons, voice

A collaboration by artists of distinct musical backgrounds, EPIPHANIES is a celebration of the ancient and contemporary. RUTH CUNNINGHAM -- known for her work as sound-healer, improviser, and early music specialist -- and GILDA LYONS -- commissioner, performer, and champion of new works -- partner on a program inspired by the artists' shared commitment to honest vocal performance, the exploration of the spiritual, and direct communication through sound.

RUTH CUNNINGHAM is a classically trained musician, a sound healing practitioner, and a founding member of Anonymous 4. She combines these skills to improvise music that connects people to the healing and spiritual power of music. Using voice and a variety of instruments she specializes both in early music and improvisational sacred music from varied spiritual traditions in both liturgical and concert settings.  With Anonymous 4, Ruth performed in concerts and festivals throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East and made twelve recordings. As a sound healing practitioner, Ruth works with individuals and groups on using the voice and music as tools for healing and transformation. She collaborates with other healers and musicians in a variety of settings and is interested in integrating sound healing and performance.  www.ruthcunningham.com

GILDA LYONS, composer, vocalist, and visual artist, combines elements of renaissance, neo-baroque, spectral, folk, agitprop Music Theater, and extended vocalism to create works of uncompromising emotional honesty and melodic beauty. The premiere of A New Kind of Fallout—Lyons’ mainstage opera inspired by the life and work of Rachel Carson, commissioned by Opera Theater of Pittsburgh—was described as “powerfully effective” (Pittsburgh Stage Magazine), “haunting” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) and “spot-on at re-creating the atmosphere of the early '60s” (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review). Lyons’ music is published by Schott, E.C. Schirmer and Burning Sled.  An active vocalist and fierce advocate of contemporary music, she has commissioned, premiered, and workshopped new works by dozens of composers. Of her performance in Daron Hagen's Shining Brow (Buffalo Philharmonic/Falletta) (Naxos) David Shengold of Opera, UK writes "Gilda Lyons's clear soprano compels admiration." www.gildalyons.com
